Pumpkin Derby

What started as a "you want to do what?" has turned into an annual tradition on our campus.

One fall, my college roommate invited me up to Seattle to participate in a pumpkin derby. We had absolutely no idea what we were doing but we decorated our pumpkin, her husband put wheels on it for us, and off to the races we went.

We quickly learned that the race was serious business and we were amateurs - but it was so much fun that we committed to return the next year.

I immediately went home and proposed the idea to my principal. After receiving a hesitant approval, I partnered with our Ag Mechanics department to assist with ramp building, pumpkin drilling, and derby assembling.

Students can partner with any staffulty member on campus and it is free to participate. However, the competition has become so fierce that many staffulty members have their own wheels (I'll admit, I own mine).

The end result is a lasting tradition loved by both staffulty and students.
